Anyway, the first thing we did in Esteli was to visit the dead. We missed Dia de los Muertos, where everyone visits dead relatives and brings flowers and lunch and spends the day chatting away.
Fun Fact #1: Headstones are painted, not engraved, so if the dead are not remembered after so many years, the name eventually wears off.
Fun Fact #2: Grandma says the gravestone will help the dead pick themselves out of the ground when Armageddon comes.
Also, we missed the elections – which is supposedly a great time to come. Everyone really gets involved, from young to old. I was later told that some of the airlines had deals for Nicaraguans to come home to vote (Miami-Nicaragua $250). Some gravestones even had posters attached to the headstones. Nicaragua just elected a Sandinista president. It is a really big deal, because so many people lost family in the war fighting for the Sandinista cause, and were denied jobs, etc. for being Sandinista.
