Austria | Day 3 in Salzburg/Vienna

After waking up at 9am, we checked out of the hostel and headed toward the train station. The train ride from Salzburg to Vienna is about three hours long and about 72 Euro roundtrip (making it as expensive as the plane tickets from Dublin to Salzburg). It was nice to have a break from walking.

When we arrived in Vienna, it took about two hours to find our hostel (which, of course, was only about three minutes from the train station.) Vienna is incredibly different than Salzburg. Salzburg is an adorable, little city with a winding river and nice views. Vienna is a huge city - where every building is older and more impressive than the one before it.

For instance, while walking to the main cathedral, we passed by the Hofburg. It was once the emperor's palace, but now its decaying and the windows are boarded up.



Funny side note: When I went to mail a postcard, I noticed something about their language which isn't very friendly...

They even let visitors in while mass is going on; see the priest in the distance? It's a shame the photograph doesn't pick up the extreme incense odor.


Out on the streets, we saw tons of people dressed in Mozart-style clothing who were selling tickets to a classical music concert. When in Vienna, do as the Viennese... (did I spell that right?) So we went. It turned out to be really nice. The hall, although small, had nice acoustics and it was just touristy enough to keep my interest (they had some songs with an Opera singer and some ballet).
